BUGS - KÄFER ///
bugs, errors, and weird behaviors
Using projected animated insects as a metaphor for bugs in computer software, we have created an interactive installation that explores how software bugs can sometimes provoke unusual and even enlightening results.
The digital bugs are projected onto a multifaceted ‘anthill’, where, using their own shadows, visitors can stimulate the bugs’ movement and guide them in particular directions. When a bug reaches the highest peak of the anthill, it triggers a random variation in the software, subsequently changing the bug’s appearance or behavior. Then, the debugging starts all over again.
Technology:
- predistorted projection of digital mappings onto a real threedimensional object
- infrared camera tracking of user silhouettes
- custom software to tie the users shadow interaction to the virtual bugs movement

video objects ///
video projection software for perspective distortion
"Video objects" is a software able to perspectively distort video content in realtime. The pre-distorted videos are projected from one video projector onto multiple real world three-dimensional objects. The resulting projected imagery appears to adhere to the surfaces of the objects. The objects can have virtually any shape and and can be arranged in a variety of angles.
The source videos can be adjusted to the respective objects on the spot with a projected helper grid or an imported 3D model of the real world setup. Once the system is aligned, the projected videos can be exchanged in realtime by dragging and dropping in a VJ-like manner.
This software reduces the setup time of a multi-surface video projection to a couple of minutes. No complicated projector alignment and keystoning is necessary.
